    About Mary

Mary Preis is an educator. She is a scholar of art, history, anthropology, ethnography, and archaeology specializing in the theory of creative practice. Her research ranges from the Paleolithic origins of art to contemporary art and design. In short, she considers all artistic agendas and possibilities, and distills salient ideas so we can best understand our past, present, and future.

Her interests are intersections: high culture and pop, the personal and public. Mary chaired the first-year program, Liberal Arts Department, organized national conferences, and other events at The Pacific Northwest College of Art.

Teaching and pedagogy are Preis’ main interests, yet she also maintains an art practice, most recently focusing on language and the visuality of words to communicate even when they cannot be read.
