    About Karen

    Karen Kalafatas is a changemaker, entrepreneur, artist and owner of Yellow Rainboot LLC, a fundraising, communications and marketing consulting firm that supports arts and youth-focused non-profits. She has created and implemented communications strategies and raised millions of dollars for large organizations like Harvard University and City Year Inc., as well as for smaller arts organizations across the country.

    A stalwart leader and advocate for equity and inclusion, Karen is Creator and Executive Producer of Kids Really Rock™, the largest free family music festival in the country (10,000 people annually), whose mission is to build community through high-quality, equitable arts programming.  For her work on this event, she was awarded the prestigious Berklee Urban Service Award by Berklee College of Music. Karen is also a Co-Founder of Family Music Forward, a collective dedicated to creating safe spaces for all children by dismantling systemic racism in the family music industry.

    As a family music artist herself, Karen has performed for audiences large and small across the country and world. Along with her band Karen K & the Jitterbugs, she has been featured in multiple media outlets including The New York Times, The Boston Globe, Huffington Post, Broadway World, PBS, CBS and Sirius XM Radio.  Karen lives with her husband John, daughter Rebecca and dog, Hewey in a little house with too many guitars in Chapel Hill, NC.
